Rockies Insider: Leave it to the hapless Dbacks to make Colorado look good in 2021

The Rockies Insider.

The going’s been rough for the Rockies this year, but Colorado fans can take solace in the fact that their team isn’t the worst dumpster fire in the division.

Over in Arizona, the hapless Diamondbacks are bad enough to make the Rockies look good. Last-place Arizona trails Colorado by 5.5 games in the NL West, and has lost 19 consecutive road games heading into Friday.

While the Rockies have had their fair share of pitching struggles with a 4.71 ERA, the Diamondbacks have been even worse on the mound, with a 4.97 team ERA that ranks last in MLB.

Plus, the Diamondbacks rank behind the Rockies and in the bottom third of baseball in the four main offensive categories of average, on-base percentage, slugging and OPS.

After Arizona finished 2nd, 3rd and 2nd in manager Torey Lovullo’s first three years at the helm, the Diamondbacks are pacing toward their second straight cellar-dweller finish. Arizona’s ineptitude could very well cost Lovullo his job — and it should make Rockies fans realize that things could be going even worse at 20th and Blake.

In the 10 matchups between Colorado and Arizona so far this year, the Rockies are 6-4, including a sweep in the teams’ last meeting for a three-game series at Coors Field from May 21-23. The teams have nine head-to-head games remaining, with the next showdown coming July 6-8 at Chase Field.
